Small Ship Seasons in Asia and the Pacific
There is always somewhere in season, but rarely everywhere at once.

Asia and the Pacific straddle the equator, so there is always somewhere in season for small ship cruising, but rarely everywhere at once. Planning starts with the calendar: pick the month you can travel, then see which regions are at their best.
| Region | Best months | Avoid or be flexible |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | March to May; October to November | June to July (rainy season); late summer typhoons |
| French Polynesia | Year-round; drier May to October | Wetter, warmer months November to April |
| Fiji | Year-round; drier May to October | Cyclone season November to April |
| Kimberley (Australia) | April to September | The wet season, roughly November to March |
| New Zealand and the subantarctic | November to March | Southern winter, when few ships sail |
| Indonesia (Komodo area) | The drier months, roughly April to November | The peak of the wet season |
Reading the Calendar
These are general patterns, not guarantees. Tropical weather can surprise at any time, and every operator sets its own season dates. What the table shows is how to join regions together: a traveler with time in April could pair Japan with the start of the Kimberley season; someone traveling in December could combine New Zealand with French Polynesia on the way home.
Shoulder months are often the best value and the least crowded, at the cost of a little more weather risk. In the South Pacific, the edges of the wet season can bring short tropical downpours but also fewer visitors.

Booking Windows
Small ships have few cabins, and the most sought-after departures, such as cherry blossom voyages in Japan and early-season Kimberley trips, are often sold out a year or more ahead. Expedition voyages to New Zealand’s subantarctic islands are limited by landing permits as well as cabins. If your dates are fixed, plan early; if you are flexible, our cruise advisors can watch for openings and offers. Many lines release new itineraries and run their best promotions early in the year, which is when Wave Season gathers them.

Packing by Climate
A single trip across this region can span three climates. Japan in spring calls for layers and a light jacket; the South Pacific and Indonesia call for swimwear, sun protection and water shoes; the Kimberley in the dry season is hot by day and pleasantly cool at night; and Fiordland and the subantarctic islands need waterproofs, warm layers and sturdy boots in any month. Expedition ships often lend waterproof boots, and some provide a parka, so ask before you buy. If you plan to combine two regions, pack for the colder one and buy a few light pieces on the way.
Whatever the season, keep medication, documents and a change of clothes in your hand luggage. Remote embarkation ports are a long way from replacement shops if a bag goes astray, and small ships will not wait for late luggage.
